How do I make a chart?

Under "Explore the Network", you'll see a list of firms and people. Before you have created a chart in Explore Mode, there will be one button: "Create New Chart". After you have created a chart, you'll also see "+ Add to Existing Chart".

If you choose "Create New Chart", you will create a brand-new chart with that firm or person plus any first-degree relationships.

If you choose "+ Add to Existing Chart", you will add that firm or person (and their first-degree relationships) to your existing chart.

How can I add new firms or people to my chart?

There are two ways to do this:

• Find the chart or firm you want to add on the list under "Explore the Network". Then, click the "+ Add to Existing Chart" button.
• While you're in the chart view, you can click on a firm or person. Then, check "show all relationships" on the left panel.

How do I add a filter?

Click on one of the main filter dropdowns—"firms or people", "sector", or "country"— and then check one or more options to add a filter.

Additional filters can be found by clicking on the "more..." button.

Your currently active filters will be listed under the filter dropdowns.

How do I remove a filter?

You can remove a filter in three different ways:

• Open the filter dropdown and un-check the box for the filter that you want to remove.
• Click on the filter name (for example, "sector: cattle" or "type: firms") in the list that appears underneath the main filter dropdowns.
• Click on the "more..." button and then choose "Clear All Filters" to remove ALL filters at once.

How do I search by name?

Begin typing the name of the person or firm into the search box. As you type, the results list will automatically update.

What's the difference between "explore mode" and "sector mode" or "country mode"?

"Explore mode" is found under the "Explore the Network" header. Clicking on "Create New Chart" or "+ Add to Existing Chart" from the list here puts you in explore mode.

Explore mode lets you combine any firms or people that interest you into one chart. It shows first degree relationships for the firms and people that you have selected.

Sector or country mode are found under the "Visualize Sector or Country" header. They will show you all of the firms and people for the selected sector or country at once, plus first-degree relationships.

Can I combine my chart from "explore mode" with a sector or country chart?

No. These are two separate modes.

How can I download the dataset?

Use the shortcut at the top of the page that says "Download the dataset" or simply scroll down to the download section. Choose "Download Full Dataset" to download an Excel file with the dataset.

What is included in the dataset?

The Excel file includes the full dataset in three parts: nodes (firms or people), edges (the relationships between nodes), and the codebook.

Add a new firm/person from the chart view

Click on any firm or person (also known as a node) on the chart. The information for that node will appear in the infobox. Tip: the infobox is located on the left side of the screen. On small screens, tap "Show Node Details" at the bottom of the screen to open it.

Check the box that says "show all relationships" under the node name. The chart will reload and include all first degree relationships for the node you selected.

Add a new firm/person from outside the chart

You can also add a new node that does not appear on the current chart. Click the "Return to Search" button in the top right corner.

Find the chart or firm you want to add on the list under "Explore the Network". Then, click the "+ Add to Existing Chart" button.

Remove a firm/person from the chart

A node will appear on the chart for one of two reasons: it has been included in the "show all relationships for" list, or it has a first degree relationship to one of those nodes.

To remove a node from the "show all relationships for" list, click on the node to bring up its information. Tip: you can also click on the node name in the top bar to focus on it.

Then, un-check the box that says "show all relationships". Please note that if this is the last remaining node in the "showing all relationships" list, you won't be able to un-check the box.

Start over from scratch

To start over entirely from scratch, click on "Return to Search". Choosing "Create New Chart" for a firm or person on the list will begin an entirely new chart with none of your previous selections.

View details about a firm or person on your computer

Click on the firm or person on the chart. Detailed information will appear in the infobox to the left of the screen.

Scroll down in the infobox to see more information.

View details about a firm or person on your phone

Tap on the firm or person on the chart. Then, go to the bottom of the screen and tap "Show Node Details".

Scroll down in the infobox to see more information. Close it by tapping "Hide Node Details" at the top of the infobox.

Zoom in and zoom out

Use the "+" button to zoom in and the "-" button to zoom out.

Tip: you can also zoom in or out by using a scroll wheel or track pad scroll over the chart area (on desktop) or pinching and zooming (on touch screens).

Re-center the chart

Use the re-center button (a circle surrounded by four curved lines) to bring the network into a centered view. The network will also zoom in or out to better fit your screen.

Re-run the network

The re-run button (a triangle with a loop around it) prompts the application to process the network layout again. The relationships and firms/people will stay the same, but they may be repositioned.

Tip: the re-run button is turned off on very large networks.

Search the chart by name

The search button (a magnifying glass) will open or close a small search bar. Type the name of the firm/person you would like to see in the search bar, and results will appear below.

If there are many results, scroll in the results box to see them all. Click on a result to zoom to that firm/person in the chart.

Tip: only firms and people that are in your current network (based on which firms/people are in your "showing all relationships for" list) will appear in this search. To search ALL firms and people, click "Return to Search" at the top of the screen.

Turn off animation

The animation toggle is located on the right side of the screen. If you wish to avoid animations (for example while zooming, re-centering, or re-running the chart), toggle this to the off position.

Tip: animation is turned off on very large networks.

Using legend filters

You can highlight all of the firms/people (nodes) in a certain category by clicking or tapping on the category. This will highlight the nodes on the chart in orange.

To remove the filter, click or tap on the same category. You can only have one filter showing at a time, so clicking on a different category will also remove your current category.

Choosing a relationship category (ownership, leadership, or both) will highlight both the relationship lines and the connected nodes.

Type of point

This category tells you what the colors and shapes of the chart points (firms or people, also called nodes) mean.

Type of relationships

There are many types of relationships in the dataset, but for the chart, they have been grouped into either "ownership" and "leadership" ties. Relationships between firms/people that include a least one tie from both categories are displayed with a third style.

Tip: can't see the difference in the relationship lines? Zoom in closer.

Total number of relationships

The nodes (firms/people) are sized by their total number of relationships, where nodes with more relationships are larger than nodes will fewer relationships.

Tip: total relationships doesn't mean total unique relationships! If Firm A has two different ties with Firm B, both of those ties count toward their total relationships.
